Opening Reception: Saturday, September 4, 5:00-8:00 p.m. Exhibition Dates: September 3-26, 2010
Michigan Avenue at Night by Jeffrie Chirchirillo
Jeffrie Chirchirillo creates black and white images using 35 mm film and traditional wet darkroom techniques. Each finished print is hand crafted and totally unique. His photos of Michigan Avenue are taken expressly at night, and he has a special affinity for the Water Tower, a Chicago monument he has been visiting since he was a child. Chirchirillo finds photos taken at night to be much more alluring, mysterious, and intriguing than those taken during the day, and has taken night images in many different cities, including London, Salzburg, Warsaw, Copenhagen, Berlin, Stockholm, Paris, and Rome. He has been inspired to create night images since visiting a cathedral in Salisbury, England in 1985, where, lacking a tripod, he had to rest his camera on the surrounding stone walls to get a clear shot.
The Veneto: From One Hundred And Thirty-Five Degrees
by David Schachman
From Padua to the Villa Barbaro and Venice, these images are taken with a sweeping, horizontal angle of view of one hundred and thirty-five degrees. This wide view is well suited, although not too obvious, for taking in the long, gentle sweep of the Grand Canal. However, when exploring the endless maze of small canals and bridges of Venice, the angle of view becomes a more prominent part of the subject. Views in two different directions at once: a view down the Lido in one direction and a side canal in another connected, of course, by a footbridge. Around every bend in the footpath are at least two scenes, the canal changes from reflections of the sun or sky to reflecting the buildings on either side of the canal and, of course, a footbridge. The similar, but different scenes repeat themselves throughout Venice. This wide field of view captures the visual delight of getting lost walking around Venice, the endless bends and curves, and the wonderful changing light reflecting from the water and bouncing off the buildings along the narrow canals.

Community Meeting Room, Main Library
The beginning is more than the half. -Aristotle
We become who we are in no small part because of where we have been, where we come from. In this kickoff session for Project Engage, take Flat Falcon along with you to revisit the sites of some of your most powerful memories. Capture a photographic record of Flat Falcon's exploits that will become a part of our traveling exhibit. Bring those images to our first session where we will explore memories of growing up, share our photographs with Flat Falcon, view other images with this theme, and eat pizza. Who is this Flat Falcon, you ask? Pick up the friendly, feathered Flat Falcon, instructions, and the photography packet in the Loft at least one week in advance. Participants must be Evanston Township High School Students. Register here!

Grosse Point Confluence Sculpture on the Grounds

Evanston Art Center
Artists: Arny Nadler Intrigued by the tools of the built environment, large scale sculptor Arny Nadler utilizes bundles of rebar to construct a site-specific piece that will sprawl across the landscape and penetrate the earth like a three-dimensional drawing. Inspired to work with rebar as a material normally relegated to a hidden substructure, this installation presents the material out of its usual context in a setting contrasting its intended use. Viewers are encouraged to walk the sculptures meandering path, observing its twists, curves, and voids as it interacts with the front lawn of the Evanston Art Center. The official opening reception will be on July 11th, 2010 at 1:00pm with an artist talk at 2:30pm. Both of these events are free and open to the public.Funding for "Grosse Point Confluence" is provided by Illinois Arts Council, a state agency, and the Elizabeth F. Cheney Foundation

Art Under Glass
at
708 Church Street Evanston IL
Art Under Glass showcases the work of local artists, and brings life and energy to unoccupied retail spaces. Media will be diverse including photography, sculpture, glass and canvas works. The goal is to expand the project to other sections of downtown Evanston on an ongoing basis, fusing disjointed blocks of an otherwise vital district.
Created by the Arts & Business Committee of the Evanston Arts Council last year, Art Under Glass is now in its fourth cycle, bringing life and energy to downtown Evanston streets by placing the work of local artists in empty retail spaces. The first three cycles were a joint project between the Arts & Business Committee, Downtown Evanston, and Farnsworth-Hill, Inc., which manages the 708 Church St. building, where art has been featured in windows on the 1600 block of Orrington Avenue, the 700 block of Church Street, and the 1500 block of Maple Avenue. This new cycle adds 500 Davis St. to the roster of participating properties.
The 500 Davis St. exhibit features art by Andrew Carsen, Leslie Hirschfield, Aparna Paul Jain, Sara Lettman, Martha Ruschman, and Alan Teller. Artists displayed on Orrington Avenue are Kathryn Bradford, Sarah Kaiser and Eugenia Meltzer. Jill King’s work and that of the Artists Seeds Organization are on Maple Avenue.
