Internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter/pianist Patricia Barber shares the stage with legendary jazz pianist Kenny Werner for a unique and unforgettable evening of great music and song from two of the most creative and talented performers in jazz. A favorite on the Chicago jazz scene, Barber won a Guggenheim grant in March of 2003 to create a song cycle based on Ovid's Metamorphoses. After that came two more albums and an anthology release before Barber took a break from her original material in 2008 to deliver the jazz standards studio album The Cole Porter Mix. In over a quarter century of performing, Werner has played with such jazz greats as Bob Brookmeyer, Joe Williams, Chico Freeman, Sonny Fortune, Peter Erskine, John Abercrombie, Jackie Paris, Bobby McFerrin, Lee Konitz, Billy Hart, Marian McPartland, Gunther Schuller, Ed Blackwell, John Scofield, Jack DeJohnette, Eddie Gomez, Dave Holland, Charlie Haden, and Toots Thielemans.

Ellis Paul is one of the leading voices in American songwriting. He was a principle leader in the wave of singer/songwriters that emerged from the Boston folk scene, creating a movement that revitalized the national acoustic circuit with an urban, literate, folk pop style that helped renew interest in the genre in the 1990's.
His charismatic, personally authentic performance style has influenced a generation of artists away from the artifice of pop, and closer towards the realness of folk. Though he remains among the most pop-friendly of today's singer-songwriters - his songs regularly appear in hit movie and TV soundtracks - he has bridged the gulf between the modern folk sound and the populist traditions of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger more successfully than perhaps any of his songwriting peers.
Genre: Folk/Kids

South Branch
This month the South Branch Book Club will be discussing The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
"One of the great pieces of American literature, The Great Gatsby is picture into the lives of individuals living in the Northeast during the 1920s. The story mixes romance with intrigue, but the primary theme of the story is the meaningless and empty lives of everyone involved. Great writing by Fitzgerald - great character development and very interesting plot twists along the way." - Amazon.com
