In December 2008, Los Angeles vocal collective Sonos debuted at the Hotel Café with an “intimate, yet scorching performance... brimming with fiery fervor, major dynamics and sexual tension” (Deli Magazine LA ). The group breathes new life into a cappella, giving the genre “a contemporary makeover... prepare to be stunned” (The Guardian UK) on their debut SONOSings, available September 15 on Verve Forecast, on which the group combines a rich, classically choral sensibility with their ultra-modern repertoire and sonic toolkit.

A Call to Action: An Artistic Dialogue Among Ten Artists
|
|
at
Noyes Cultural Arts Center
|
|
|
Opening Artist Reception: Sunday, January 24 , 3:00-5:00 PM
Curated by Carolyn Elaine
A Call to Action is a creative dialogue among ten artists addressing the open ended statement – Yes we can - yes we did – but we're not done. Each artist, through their own creative lens offers insight to the impact of the most important event in 2009 – the inauguration of a Black President.
While showcasing the individual responses to an event that has defined the end of the first decade of the new millennium, this creative alliance is an attempt to understand and appreciate different perceptions.
This Black History Month exhibition features work by Dayo, Carolyn Elaine, Kendall Grover, Malika, Stuart McClean, Max Sansing, Wanaki Shores-Navata, Tony Smith, Nina Smoot-Cain, and Buchi Upjohn.
Iimages shown above, from left, are by artists Dayo, Carolyn Elaine, Stuart McClean and Wanaki Shores-Navata.

(Don Argott, 2009, USA, color, 35mm, 101 minutes) In 1922, Philadelphia chemist Albert Barnes opened his personal collection of Impressionist (including dozens of pieces by Renoir, Matisse, and Cézanne), early Modern, and African art to the public, and later left it to a small African American university. Initially dismissed by professional collectors, the Barnes Foundation’s holdings are currently valued at over $25 billion. Now a handful of former students stand between the late chemist’s wish that his collection never be moved, and an alliance of collectors, charities, and local politicians who want his artistic treasures relocated.

Small Jazz Ensemble Concert: The Music of Richard Rodgers

Regenstein Recital Hall

Victor Goines, conductor
Richard Rodgers was one of the most successful and celebrated composers of the 20th century, writing music for more than 900 songs and for 43 Broadway musicals. His partnerships with lyricists Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein II resulted in dozens of hit musicals for the stage and screen. Between 1920 and 1943 Rodgers and Hart wrote dozens of scores for Broadway and Hollywood, including The Boys from Syracuse and Pal Joey. In 1943 Rodgers teamed with Hammerstein to write Oklahoma!, a box office smash and a landmark in musical theater history. Rodgers and Hammerstein went on to write the classic musicals Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music, all of which were adapted for film. Such Rodgers songs as “My Funny Valentine” and “The Lady Is a Tramp” have become jazz standards.

Award-winning independent filmmaker Aishah Shahidah Simmons, an incest and rape survivor, will screen and discuss her film "No! The Rape Documentary." Produced and directed during a period of eleven years by Simmons, this groundbreaking documentary features testimonials from female African-American rape survivors who defy victimization. They are juxtaposed with interviews from violence prevention advocates, theologians, sociologists, historians, anthropologists and other scholars and human rights activists, providing an interdisciplinary context in which to examine sexual violence in African-American communities. The film also explores the link between rape and homophobia. The screening will be followed by a discussion. Admission is free.

"Jennie DeVoe's voice is smoked honey on a sultry summer evening...smooth, sweet and warm, steeped in the kettle of blues/R&B - but with a rare and wonderful flavor all her own. Only a handful of girls will ever get to sound this good."- Krista Detor, singer/songwriter.
Nicholas Barron is an artist. He's a songwriter, a guitarist, singer, and painter. He began his career in Europe as a busker and ended up in Chicago where he founded C.A.S.A.(The coalition for the advancedment of street art) when the city was trying to ban Street performers. He and his fellow buskers won the right to perform on the street and in the subway. He has had a couple of well known Chicago based bands including MIND THE GAP with Guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque (currently with Garaj Mahal) and SWIMMER (with FILTER drummer Steve Gillis). Swimmer put out 2 records that we're both called "the best of Chicago" on Richard Milne's weekly Chicago radio show called Local anesthetic on 93.1 WXRT.

(Andrea Arnold, 2009, UK, color, 35mm, 124 minutes) Echoing the stark realism of Ken Loach's working class narratives, Academy-award winning director Arnold depicts a 15-year-old-girl's emotional rollercoaster without ever veering into melodrama. Expelled from school and constantly at odds with an irresponsible mother, Mia (Katie Jarvis) finds solace in hip-hop dancing. When her mother brings home handsome new boyfriend Connor (Michael Fassbender), even Mia's affected iciness can't resist his charm, and the doomed trajectory of their relationship becomes painfully clear. Winner of the Jury Prize at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.
