Pinetop Perkins with Willie "Big Eyes" Smith
at
S.P.A.C.E.
Pinetop Perkins is one of the last great Mississippi bluesmen still performing. He began playing blues around 1927 and is widely regarded as one of the best blues pianists. He’s created a style of playing that has influenced three generations of piano players and will continue to be the yardstick by which great blues pianists are measured.
Willie "Big Eyes" Smith traditional shuffle style has been regarded as the heart and soul of the Chicago blues sound, with Willie laying the beat behind many of the blues classics. But these days fans are just as likely to find Willie "Big Eyes" Smith holding on to a harmonica, his first instrument, as a drum stick. Turns out, this award-winning blues drummer is also an accomplished harmonica master and dynamic vocalist.

Ovations
at
Harris Theater
The audience’s standing ovation at the Harris Theatre in October was a clear sign they agreed with the Chicago Sun-Times dance critic who wrote the company “is dancing sensationally these days,” and spoke of our dancers’ “sheer aerobic power” and “bravura overall technique and high flying partnering skills.”
The critically acclaimed Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago showcases their greatest hits in “OVATIONS,” GJDC’s Spring 2010 engagement.
The program will include:
“Prey” (2003) by former Hubbard Street Dance Chicago member and Movin’ Out alum Ron DeJesus. Seven Dancers perform award-winning choreography to the heart pounding rhythms of the Kodo Drummers of Japan.
“Entropy” (2002) by former Joffery Ballet company principal Davis Robertson. A sensual and rhythmically complex work is performed by ensemble to the music of Astor Piazzolla and Dhol Foundation.
“Pyrokinesis” (2007). This award-winning work was created for GJDC by independent choreographer and former Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater dancer Christopher Huggins. It showcases the unique and specific strengths of the individual company members.
… plus three additional selections from GJDC’s critically acclaimed repertoire to be announced.
Come see a spectacular night of dance infused with power, movement and explosive chemistry! For tickets, visit the Harris Theater Box Office or call 312-334-7777 or visit www.harristheaterchicago.org.

Adapted and directed by Catherine Miller Hardy
What happens when the revolution is over? Based on the novel by Margaret Atwood and adapted by third-year MFA directing student Catherine Miller Hardy, The Handmaid's Tale is the story of one woman's life in the Republic of Gilead, an authoritarian regime in what was, until recently, the United States of America. Offred is a handmaid, one of the few remaining fertile women, given to a wealthy and powerful couple to bear “their” children. As weeks stretch into months and this strange new world becomes the norm, Offred must turn to us: to preserve the life she knew, to hold fast to her dreams of escape and to face her own complicity.
Presented through TIC's Masters-in-the-Making Series: see the great directors of tomorrow today!

AfriCOBRA and the Chicago Black Arts Movement
at
Norris University Center
In 1968, a group of artists, many of them either from or residing in Chicago, came together to discuss the premise that Black visual art has innate and intrinsic creative components that are characteristic of the culture. They called themselves AfriCOBRA (African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists.) The artists who were present at the meeting consisted of painters, printmakers, textile designers, dress designers, photographers and sculptors who felt that their visual expression was definitely affected by the fact that they were Black and that their Blackness contributed a specific quality to their visual expression.
Once the artists concluded that they had specific visual qualities intrinsic to African American culture, the following aesthetic principles were agreed upon: bright colors, the human figure, lost and found line, and the lettering and images which they agreed identified the social, economical and political conditions of African Americans. These AfriCOBRA artists felt that a collective effort was possible under a common philosophy and a common system of aesthetic principles. They all noted that their work had a message: it was not fantasy or art for art's sake, it was specific and functional by expressing statements about their existence as Black people.
One of the goals of this exhibition is to demonstrate how AfriCOBRA is just one of the many artistic organizations with connections to Chicago that has influenced African American visual artistic production on the national level.
