(James Ivory, 1987, UK, color, video, 140 minutes) Adapting one of author E.M. Forster’s most personal works, this Merchant Ivory period drama follows an upper class gay man’s coming of age in Edwardian Britain. Fellow Cambridge students Maurice (James Wilby) and Clive (Hugh Grant) fall in love, but the legal and social ramifications of open homosexuality pressure Clive to renounce his true feelings and marry a socialite (Phoebe Nicholls). Unable to escape his attraction to Clive, Maurice remains a fixture in the couple’s life, and finds new hope for romantic fulfillment with their handsome gamekeeper (Rupert Graves).

Visual Poetry of Black

Boocoo presents the works of the talented Julio Cesar Montaño Montenegro. When Julio Cesar Montaño Montenegro puts ink to paper to create poetry, he uses images instead of words to tell stories of the African diaspora and the violence that caused him to leave Colombia. His ink drawings explore political and cultural issues, especially related to descendants of Africans worldwide. Montaño, trained as a social anthropologist, holds a diploma in research and communication for peace. He sees his art as furthering such communication. In his images he exposes human rights abuses, such as one depicting the assassination of a leader among Afro-Colombians who fish in a traditional way.

Adapted by Ibrahim Miari
Based on the novella by Ghassan Kanafani World Premiere Adaptation
1948 marked the birth of the Jewish state and the exodus of 500,000 Palestinians from Israel. Safiyeh and Said fled during the fighting and were forced to leave their infant son behind in his crib. Holocaust survivors Ephraim and Miriam arrive in Haifa where they are given a new last name, the abandoned home and the baby to raise as their own. Now 20 years later, the boy’s birth parents return, hoping to recover what they once lost. Adapted from the 1968 Palestinian novella, Return to Haifa is an intensely intimate story about how we draw the lines of home, family and identity across time and politics. Purchase Tickets

A Call to Action: An Artistic Dialogue Among Ten Artists
|
|
at
Noyes Cultural Arts Center
|
|
|
Opening Artist Reception: Sunday, January 24 , 3:00-5:00 PM
Curated by Carolyn Elaine
A Call to Action is a creative dialogue among ten artists addressing the open ended statement – Yes we can - yes we did – but we're not done. Each artist, through their own creative lens offers insight to the impact of the most important event in 2009 – the inauguration of a Black President.
While showcasing the individual responses to an event that has defined the end of the first decade of the new millennium, this creative alliance is an attempt to understand and appreciate different perceptions.
This Black History Month exhibition features work by Dayo, Carolyn Elaine, Kendall Grover, Malika, Stuart McClean, Max Sansing, Wanaki Shores-Navata, Tony Smith, Nina Smoot-Cain, and Buchi Upjohn.
Iimages shown above, from left, are by artists Dayo, Carolyn Elaine, Stuart McClean and Wanaki Shores-Navata.
